Imagine for a moment, you’re riding in a self-driving car along a busy street. The vehicle is cruising along when it suddenly loses connection to the data center it uses to analyze important visual and safety information on-the-fly. Internal safeguards thankfully bring your car to a safe stop. But your ride of the future is now stopped and stuck. It turns out, a technician working to add more cable to a network closure accidentally bumped an existing line, disrupting the critical fiber connection.

While this scenario is an oversimplification of the technology, it highlights just how important it is to keep networks up and functioning. Critical infrastructure depends on the reliability of fiber. And so do advanced technologies like AI, smart devices, and autonomous manufacturing.

Ensuring reliability for high stakes use cases

In today’s tech landscape, reliability is no longer a nice-to-have. Use cases like self-driving cars, long-haul data center interconnects, industrial automation, and connected healthcare devices demand dependable connectivity, as network failures or latency could result in severe financial losses or operational catastrophes. Research shows reliability is now the primary metric for network operators, surpassing bandwidth speed.

As metro networks become denser with operators packing more fiber into existing infrastructure, the risk of disruption is always present. That’s where Corning’s Evolv® FRECAP Closure offers a more resilient approach to fiber installation. The fiber optic enclosure is designed for quick, easy installations without compromising the reliability or sealing of previously installed cables in any ports. Its unique design allows technicians to add, remove, or change cables with less risk of disturbing neighboring connections compared to traditional closures, enabling streamlined deployments and improved reliability.

Unlocking streamlined fiber deployment

FRECAP’s standout feature is its eight independent cable entry segments. Think of it like eight triangular slices of pizza or pie. Those segments are individually gel sealed, which means cables are more resilient to disruptions during re-entry into the closure. With snap-and-seal gel technology in each segment, tools like screwdrivers, heat guns, or sticky tape are no longer needed, simplifying installation and maintenance in the field. Additionally, an integrated gel-sealing ring improves reliability for the entire closure as well as speed of installation.

It’s not just installation that’s streamlined — re-entry is up to 50% faster with FRECAP than with other closures, minimizing the risk of costly service interruptions and enabling more efficient network expansion. FRECAP’s design reduced the risk of disruption, ensuring long-term dependability and consistent performance.

Designed with technicians in mind, FRECAP is also compatible with widely used splice trays, allowing crews to work with a familiar interface while benefiting from faster, more streamlined installation.

Preparing networks for what’s next

While reliability is the top industry priority, the ability to future-proof and continue expansion is also top-of-mind. As connectivity demands accelerate, increased splice capacity and adaptability are essential. FRECAP can hold 33% more splice trays that other closures, increasing the overall splicing capacity and enabling network operators to expand without additional closures or vaults.

Its increased capacity and versatility allow it to function as a single closure that’s adaptable across multiple applications — from fiber-to-the-home builds to long-haul data center interconnects. This flexibility reduces deployment complexity and streamlines inventory and SKU management.

Keeping critical networks up and running

In a world where demands for network reliability are of the utmost importance, the Evolv FRECAP Closure helps operators maintain the integrity of their existing fiber networks while staying ahead of growing demand. In critical environments where downtime is not an option, FRECAP is designed to deliver the resilience required to keep operations running smoothly.
