A Legacy of Life-Changing Innovation
We invest to lead in technologies and capabilities that are vital to progress. And we apply new combinations of our assets and capabilities to advance important secular trends in tandem with our customers. Corning's story in transforming the semiconductor manufacturing industry is no different, and traces back to the 1930s. While Dr. James Franklin Hyde was working on the PYREX® 200” Disk for the Hale Telescope, he conceived of a chemical process, flame hydrolysis, to make the most immaculate commercial glass product on Earth – an ultra-pure glass that would eventually become known as Corning® HPFS® Fused Silica.
This world-changing innovation, ultra-pure glass, was used initially in radar technology during World War II and later in the space shuttle windows and telescope mirrors. Years later, this material and the process to produce it, chemical vapor deposition, were the starting points for the breakthrough in the optical communications revolution, and later for semiconductor manufacturing. Today, our Semiconductor Technologies & Solutions business carries forth our dedication to supplying glass solutions that meet the industry's technology roadmaps in the continued pursuit of Moore's Law.
