Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) announced today that four of its innovative optical communications products received high scores from Broadband Technology Report in its Diamond Technology Reviews and will be recognized at a reception on Oct. 22 during the 2018 Cable-Tec Expo® in Atlanta, Georgia.
“During this transformative time in our industry, it is validating to receive such high marks from the engineering experts at Diamond Technology Reviews,” said Kim Hartwell, chief commercial officer, Corning Optical Communications. “At Corning, we strive to innovate products that increase deployment speed and network capability, expanding the possibilities for network operators to get ahead of oncoming demand for reliable, high-bandwidth business and residential services.”
Award classification was based on the impact products have on designers, systems integrators, and end users. Corning Optical Communications’ innovations that earned elite status from a panel of cable telecommunications engineering experts include:
- RocketRibbon™ extreme-density cable. RocketRibbon delivers up to twice the fiber count in approximately the same footprint of existing central tube and stranded ribbon tube cable designs, which allows operators to quickly install more capacity in the same duct space to support evolving networks.
- ALTOS® Lite cable with binderless FastAccess® technology. This innovation combines the crush resistance and rodent protection of an armored cable along with the capability for installers to peel away cable jackets by hand. Manufacturing advancements eliminate the use of binder yarns and waterblocking tapes for safer cable preparation and greater reduction in cable access times as compared to traditional designs.
- The OptiTap® field-installable connector, which leverages technology that has already expanded broadband access to more than 45 million homes globally. This innovation enables rapid restoration and repair to preconnectorized drop cables without a power or heat source in just under seven minutes per connector.
- The local convergence point enclosure (LCPE) with splice and wavelength division multiplexing capabilities, which reduces multiple, single-purpose units into one integrated enclosure. Allowing for faster deployment with minimal civil requirements, these enclosures support parent-to-child node architectures connecting up to 128 subscribers today and enabling fiber-to-the-home migration by adding splitter modules.
“Corning is to be congratulated for four elite-score entries this year,” said Stephen Hardy, editorial director/associate publisher, Broadband Technology Report (www.broadbandtechreport.com). “Our judges were impressed by the way the entries make the field technician’s life a little easier.”
