Visibility

Visibility

At Corning, we believe that maintaining supply chain visibility is integral to preserving the integrity of our commitment to Supply Chain Social Responsibility. We leverage a suite of technology platforms that enable us to closely monitor our supply chain operations, capturing data and sharing supply chain information faster, more efficiently, and more accurately than ever before. Having 24/7 visibility of our supply chain allows us to quickly identify and proactively manage issues to ensure social responsibility throughout our global network.

Managing Risk

Corning’s risk management process begins before companies even join our supply chain. Corning uses riskmethods, a supply risk profile / rating solution, to identify potential risks before we select and add suppliers to our supply chain. Riskmethods is an easy-to-use portal that provides real-time, objective, enterprise-wide risk exposure measurement and reporting across the supply chain.

Corning tracks 90% of supply chain spend, represented by approximately 2,000 suppliers with more than 9,000 locations. We are in process of expanding supplier tracking within riskmethods to include sub-tier suppliers. These sub-tier suppliers are identified in part by our tier 1 supplier relationship owners as critical suppliers of materials and components in our supply chain. Through initiatives such as Corning’s responsible mining initiative, we are working to identify and track sub-tier materials suppliers, such as mines, that will be monitored through our supply chain risk assessment tool, riskmethods.  Tracking these suppliers is a critical component to meeting our 2025 sustainable supply chain goal and enables Corning to monitor our sub-tier supplier base.

Our risk managers use riskmethods’ digitalization technologies, including big data monitoring, machine learning, and AI to make proactive assessments of supply chain risk across the globe at a moment’s notice.

The riskmethods tool collects data from a variety of sources through its content partners, like EcoVadis and Rapid Ratings, and through scanning thousands of news sites to provide updated risks assessments for Corning’s supply base.  Corning uses riskmethods to monitor risks such as labor practices and human rights violations to be alerted if that type of risk is identified in our supply base, including sub-tier suppliers within the database.

Supply chain social and environmental responsibility risks are monitored and evaluated, across the enterprise-wide supply chain, for the following risk profiles:

  • Labor Practices and Human Rights
  • Environmental
  • Information and IP Security
  • Regulatory and Legal
  • Corruption and Bribery

During the monitoring process, high-risk situations are flagged and delivered to qualified and designated risk managers in real time. This insight enables us to proactively manage potentially high-risk situations and to quickly create risk-mitigation plans to minimize, and ideally avoid, the exposure.
