Corning Withdraws from OFC 2020
CORNING, N.Y. | John Arwood | March 02, 2020

Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) announced today it will not attend the 2020 Optical Networking and Communication Conference & Exhibition (OFC) March 10-12 in San Diego, California, as a precautionary measure for its employees and customers amid the spread of COVID-19, known as the coronavirus.

“The safety and health of our customers, our employees and their families is of utmost importance to us,” said Dr. Bernhard Deutsch, vice president and general manager, Corning Optical Fiber and Cable. “We appreciate the steps being taken by OFC organizers for the safety of conference attendees. However, given the continuing spread of the virus in multiple locations around the world, we believe withdrawing from this year’s conference is the best course of action. We made this difficult decision after close consultation with our medical and security teams. We value our long-standing collaborative relationship with The Optical Society, and look forward to participating in OFC conferences for a long time to come.”

Corning’s smaller and denser fiber and cable innovations, originally scheduled to be introduced at the conference, will be announced soon. Corning will also announce details of its plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the invention of the first low-loss optical fiber by three Corning scientists.

Corning’s sponsorship of awards and grants connected with the conference will remain in place. These include the John Tyndall Award, the Corning Women in Optical Communications Travel Grant, and the Corning Outstanding Student Paper Competition.
