Think of it as a driver for hire. When you’ve taken your car out for a night on the town and had a little too much to drink, designated drivers in Beijing will come to the rescue — getting you and your car home safely. We followed one such designated driver on a bitterly cold night in Beijing.
Bundled up for the cold, his tools of the trade are a foldable scooter and his Huawei Mate 9 smartphone featuring tough, damage-resistant Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3. His phone, of course, keeps him in business. It’s what he needs to take calls from customers, navigate to their locations and stay connected with his family. Mounted on his scooter’s handle bars, the Huawei Mate 9 handles the bumps, uneven roads and guides him to his next location.
Once at a customer’s location, the designated driver folds his scooter and places it in the trunk, takes the keys and drives the customer home. Mission accomplished and then it’s back on the scooter and back to the city where he waits for another customer call. It’s a lot of distance to travel. And these impaired customers can also be challenging — unclear of their own location, cancelling with no notification — leaving a designated driver literally out in the cold. Clearly, it takes tough determination to ride out the night, but it also requires compassion and a great, big heart.
