The Corning Incorporated Foundation has approved a $1 million grant in support of disaster relief and rebuilding efforts in Japan. Additionally, the Foundation will match U.S. employee contributions to certain aid organizations, up to $100,000, in the Foundation’s first challenge grant since Hurricane Katrina.
“Based on the sheer magnitude of the situation in Japan since the March 11 earthquake -- and the fact that Corning has so many employees and operations in Japan -- the Foundation Trustees felt it was appropriate to respond in a very significant way,” said Kristin Swain, president of the Corning Incorporated Foundation.
Over the weeks to come, the Foundation staff will work with the American Red Cross, Save the Children, and Give2Asia to target its $1 million in direct grants to a wide variety of human-services efforts. The Foundation will also total the amount of employee donations to these agencies by April 30 and increase its own contributions by the same amount, up to $100,000.
Corning is also organizing a separate Asia-based employee matching-donation program that will be administered by its Corning Japan KK subsidiary.
“What we’re hearing right now is that the greatest need for funds is not for short-term relief, but for longer-term recovery from the disaster,” Swain said. “We expect our contributions to go toward things like infrastructure rebuilding – roads, schools, and hospitals, for example. We also want to respond to Japan’s concerns about post-traumatic stress that is likely to occur for many of the earthquake and tsunami victims, especially the children.”
