Glass is the foundation for premium handheld OLED

Flexible OLED devices are stunning in their brightness and flexibility, bringing an entirely new experience to gamers, sports fans, movie lovers, and more.

But before those exhilarating experiences can even begin, the flexible OLED panel must undergo a highly demanding, extremely high-temperature manufacturing process. This means, of course, that all materials used in the displays must be structurally and thermally stable. Dimensions must not vary by the tiniest degree, even under temperatures beyond 500 degrees celsius.

Essential to the process is a high-performance display glass – specifically, Corning Lotus™ NXT Glass. This glass acts as a carrier substrate for a thin layer of plastic, or polyimide. That’s the material that is ultimately molded, curved, or folded to form the display panel.

Because of its unique ability to remain stable even under extreme heat, Lotus NXT Glass is the ideal carrier glass substrate for this process. It provides a solid foundation for the building of the polyimide backplane, ensuring it will remain stable as it transforms into a high-resolution panel.

Once the glass substrate carries the polyimide-based panel to fruition, a UV laser helps cleanly separate it from the carrier glass substrate. The flexible polyimide-based panel, now functionally complete, can be bent and molded into today’s cutting-edge curved OLED designs.
