Corning’s latest high-performance glass aids with manufacturing efficiency

Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) and Tianma Micro-Electronics Group today announced Tianma’s selection of Corning Lotus™ NXT Glass for its two new low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) display panel models.

Tianma successfully incorporated Lotus NXT Glass into its 5.46-inch and 4.97-inch full high-definition products. Tianma creates LTPS panels for use in high-resolution smartphones and tablets that feature upward of 500 pixels per inch (ppi).

“After evaluating Lotus NXT Glass in our manufacturing lines, we are confident it will meet both our tough requirements and our customers’ tough requirements for high-ppi displays,” said Wang Lei, general manager, Tianma Xiamen. “In particular, we are impressed with its low level of total pitch variation and its excellent etching performance.”

Lotus NXT Glass provides industry-leading levels of minimal total pitch variation. This allows panel makers to use tighter design rules, helping them improve yields and develop higher-resolution devices with lower power consumption.

“We’re pleased to continue our collaboration with one of the display industry’s fastest-growing panel makers,” said Michael Kunigonis, business director, High Performance Displays, Corning Glass Technologies. “Tianma’s inventive spirit aligns with Corning’s rich history of innovation, and together, we will enable some of the industry’s most cutting-edge displays.”

Corning unveiled Lotus NXT Glass June 1 at Display Week in San Jose, Calif., an industry tradeshow hosted by the Society for Information Display.

Tianma’s G5.5 LTPS line, which has entered mass production, is located in Xiamen, China and has a capacity of 30,000 TFT and 30,000 color-filters per month. Now, Tianma is setting up two G6 LTPS lines in Wuhan and Xiamen, China. Each of these lines will have a capacity of 30,000 TFT and 30,000 color-filters per month.

Tianma plans to commercialize its latest panels featuring Lotus NXT Glass by the end of the third quarter of 2015.
