CORNING, N.Y. — Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) announced today that it is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its ULE® glass at the 2018 China International Optoelectronic Expo (CIOE) Sept. 5-8 in Shenzhen, China.

From the earliest days of refractive and reflective telescopes to applications in the semiconductor industry, Corning ultra-low expansion glasses have enabled groundbreaking discoveries.

Manufactured at Corning’s Canton, New York, facility, ULE® – or ultra-low expansion glass – is a titania-silicate glass that exhibits virtually no dimensional changes over extreme temperature variation, originally making it the material of choice for many astronomy applications because of these stable qualities.

More recently, the thermal stability of this glass makes it an ideal material for extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) in semiconductor chip manufacturing. EUV lithography systems require a zero-expansion glass due to the thermal loads produced on the optics during the EUV lithography exposure process.

“The evolution of ULE® is a classic example of how Corning is able to invent a revolutionary material, improve it over time, and repurpose it to fulfill the needs of future technologies,” said Cassandra Taliaferro, commercial director, Corning Advanced Optics

Corning used ULE® to produce the lightweight mirror for the Hubble telescope and the 8-meter glass monolithic mirrors for the Gemini and Subaru telescopes, among other historic research projects. Thanks in part to the stability of ULE®, the Hubble telescope has captured the farthest view into the universe yet, allowing scientists to see more than 13 billion light years away.

“The same glass that NASA uses to capture images of the farthest regions of the universe is now the glass that is used to produce the most advanced integrated circuits enabling faster communications and greater computing power,” Taliaferro said. “We are proud to be celebrating 75 years of ULE® at CIOE this year.”

With high-quality materials such as ULE® and Corning® HPFS®, Corning is meeting the growing demand for semiconductor lithography, telescopes, and other government optics projects.

These materials and technologies will be on display in the Corning booth – #9E21 in Hall 9 – at CIOE where Corning will also be showcasing its ULE® 75th Anniversary video.
