The Corning® 5L Erlenmeyer flask helps scale-up cell culture growth without taking up more incubator space

Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) today announced it has expanded its product line for bioprocess applications with the addition of the Corning® 5L Erlenmeyer flask, designed to help scale up suspension culture with space efficiency in mind. The flasks are sterile and ready to use, ideal for shaker culture applications and storage.

Corning designed its new flask to address customers’ increasing needs to reduce costs and to make more effective use of available space. The diameter of the Corning 5L Erlenmeyer flask is the same as Corning’s 2L and 3L flasks.  The new 5L flask fits into existing shaker hardware and holds a higher volume of suspended cells without taking up more space in lab incubators.

“Corning understands that our customers are constantly looking for ways to meet their need for a continuous flow of cell cultures for scale-up without requiring more space or money to do so,” said Chris Mach, director of Bioprocess, Corning Life Sciences. “The Corning 5L Erlenmeyer provides a bigger flask without requiring bigger equipment to support it, and also features a new, patented design to increase culture performance.”

Performance features of the Corning 5L Erlenmeyer flask include:
• Patented baffle-bottom design that reduces stress on cells and helps fluid flow and aeration
• Molded-in graduations for accuracy
• Large vent cap for continuous gas exchange while ensuring sterility and preventing leakage
• Pre-sterilized at the highest Sterility Assurance Level (SAL) of 10-6
• Certified nonpyrogenic and RNase and DNase-free
• One-time reusability by autoclaving at 121oC, 15psi for 20 minutes
• Ergonomically designed neck for easy handling and splash-free, easy-pour design

The Corning 5L Erlenmeyer flask is a heavily constructed, metal-free polycarbonate vessel. A USP Class VI material provides excellent optical clarity and mechanical strength, and also features heavy, metal-free polypropylene caps.
