Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) highlighted its industry-leading expertise at the 60th IWCS International Cable • Connectivity Symposium in Charlotte, N.C., through technical presentations, awards, and an executive panel discussion. The four-day symposium runs through Wednesday and is approximately an hour’s drive from Corning Optical Communications’ headquarters in Hickory, N.C.

On Monday, the following Corning engineers, scientists and leaders were honored for award-winning papers, presentations and leadership:

  • Robert Elkins, Jeff Danley and Dr. Kevin Sparks from Corning Optical Communications; Alexey Amosov and Petr Gorelchenko from Corning Scientific Center; and Dr. Andrey Kobyakov from Corning Optical Communications, were presented The Jack Spergel Memorial Award for Outstanding Technical Paper for the “Compensating for Fiber Undercut in Physical Contact Optical Connectors.”
  • Curtis Queen, Dave Chiasson and Mark Paap of Corning Optical Communications were presented the Outstanding Poster Paper for “Inkjet Printing for Outdoor Cable Designs.”
  • Robert Elkins of Corning Optical Communications was given the Kitts-Kingsley Award for Best Presentation for “Compensating for Fiber Undercut in Physical Contact Optical Connectors.”
  • Dr. Peter Bark and John Sicotte, of Corning, were honored as IWCS leaders of the past during the Plenary Session Luncheon. Dr. Bark was a long-standing symposium committee member and one of the original members of the IWCS Committee. He served from 1986 to 2002, and finished as a member of the IWCS Board of Directors. Sicotte served on the IWCS Committee from 1995 to 2009, on the IWCS Board of Directors from 2000 to 2009 and was board chairman from 2006 to 2009.

Immediately before the luncheon, Clark Kinlin, CEO and president of Corning Optical Communications, joined an executive panel that explored the demand for bandwidth and infrastructure growth, with a focus on the wireless industry.

In addition to multiple paper and poster presentations, Corning led the following technical seminars at the symposium:

  • On Sunday, Dave Seddon, senior engineering associate for Corning Optical Communications, presented “Fundamentals of Optical Fibers and Fiber Optic Cable Design and Application.”
  • On Monday, Dr. Scott Bickham, senior development associate for Corning Optical Fiber, presented “Bend-resistant Single-mode and Multimode Fibers.”
  • Also Monday, David Kozischek, market manager, Data Centers for Corning Optical Communications, presented “Data Center Design – Preparing the Cable Infrastructure for 40G and 100G Migrations and Other Topics of Electronics and Testing.”
