Corning Opens New Advanced-Flow Facility to Help Accelerate the Global Development of Pharmaceuticals

AFPT site offers state-of-the-art continuous-flow processing equipment and expertise

Suzhou, ChinaCorning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) recently celebrated the grand opening of its Advanced Flow Pharmaceutical Technology (AFPT) facility in Suzhou Wuzhong’s Biomedical Industrial Park. The facility will support the company’s AFPT services business to help contract development manufacturing organizations (CDMOs) and pharmaceutical companies realize the benefits of continuous-flow manufacturing while supporting the flow-process development of key starting materials and active pharmaceutical ingredients.

“At Corning, we focus on developing life-changing innovations. AFPT’s ability to enable safer, more efficient, and affordable medicines is a perfect example of this,” said Marty Curran, executive vice president and innovation officer, Corning Incorporated, during the event’s opening ceremony. “AFPT’s services will provide faster methods for identifying effective compounds during early-stage research which will help shorten drug development timelines.

During the celebration, Corning was joined by local government officials, leaders of pharmaceutical academia and industries, as well as industrial associations to commemorate the milestone and host the inaugural “2023 Innovation-Driven Continuous Pharmaceutical Industry Development Summit” to share and discuss best practices in the continuous manufacturing of medicine field.

“Corning’s AFPT services are coming at a critical time for pharmaceutical companies, as demand for life-saving medicines continues to increase globally,” said Yi Jiang, division vice president, Emerging Innovations Group, chairman and general manager, Corning Advanced Flow Pharmaceutical Technology. “AFPT is able to streamline what is typically a time-consuming process for customers with our on-site equipment and expertise to help speed medicine delivery to market.”

The AFPT facility is located in Suzhou, a growing area for pharmaceutical research, manufacturing, and technical expertise – enabling the Corning team to develop strong collaborations with global and local CDMO’s, pharmaceutical companies, as well as universities and research facilities.

“Corning’s new facility in Wuzhong aligns with our industrial strategy and has broad prospects for future development,” said Ding Lixin, party secretary of Wuzhong district. “We’re hopeful that Corning AFPT can help attract more companies in the value chain to share new development opportunities and build a prosperous biopharmaceutical industry ecosystem in Wuzhong.”

Since the launch of its AFPT business earlier this year, Corning has seen broad interest from CDMOs and pharmaceutical companies around the world.

“It’s important for Corning to be a collaborative partner with those in the industry,” Yi said, “because we can ultimately help all of the companies achieve the same goal – getting medicines out the door faster, to those who need them the most.”
