Corning and Ulsan Technopark Announce the First Advanced-Flow Reactor Application Qualified Lab in South Korea

Corning Incorporated, a world leader in materials science, and Ulsan Technopark, a technology development center supporting new growth industries in South Korea, recently established an Advanced-Flow™ Reactor (AFR) application-qualified lab (AQL) within Ulsan’s pilot plant location at the Fine Chemical and Material Technical Institute. Application qualified labs enable AFR customers to effectively access continuous-flow demonstrations, experimental trials, feasibility testing, and chemical reaction process development. This collaboration will allow Corning and Ulsan to expand continuous-flow process development capabilities in South Korea’s fine and specialty chemical spaces while also meeting the growing needs of the performance materials market focused on renewable energy.

This AQL facility, the first in South Korea, will offer AFR testing, experimental trials, process development services, and continuous-flow demonstrations for customers. Additionally, the lab will feature Corning’s G1 and G1 photo reactor systems, allowing current and potential customers to evaluate the AFR products and identify appropriate processes that can be seamlessly scaled to industrial production. Corning’s AFR business currently has 18 AQLs at customer locations around the world.

“Ulsan Technopark has been a critical to the advancement of many industries in South Korea,” said Dr. Yi Jiang, Division Vice President and General Manager, Corning AFR. “They bring a breadth of knowledge on all stages of innovation, and we’re looking forward to seeing how this AQL can help expand the use of continuous flow technology within the region.”

As part of Corning’s AQL network, Ulsan will work with customers to evaluate new and existing processes and provide recommendations for implementations. Ulsan also offers expertise in technology development and transfer as well as training and commercialization.

“For more than six decades, Ulsan has been at the center of developing innovations to help drive industrial growth in South Korea,” said Il Hwan Kim, Director, Fine Chemical and Material Technical Institute, Ulsan Technopark. “It’s exciting to work with a company like Corning who places a high value on the importance of innovation, customer relationships, and utilizing the latest technologies to help move entire industries forward in a better and more efficient direction.”

Corning’s distribution partner for AFR in South Korea for nearly a decade, Well E&C Corporation, worked closely with Ulsan to install the AFR units in its facility and will also help with on-site training and education.

“We’re excited to continue our work with Corning at one of South Korea’s best technology centers at Ulsan Technopark,” said Yong Mooc Park, President of Well E&C Corporation. “I expect that this collaboration will greatly contribute to the safety and development of the Korean chemical industry.”
