Taking tough to new heights

Ah, the frustration of a broken screen caused by a dropped smartphone! According to a recent consumer study, this is the number one complaint consumers have with the cover glass on their electronic devices. In fact, 85 percent of smartphone owners have dropped their phones at least once in the past year. With this in mind, our scientists set out to develop our toughest cover glass to date, Corning® Gorilla® Glass 5.

Gorilla Glass 5 touts dramatically improved drop performance compared with competitive glass designs and earlier versions of Gorilla Glass. How dramatic? The glass delivers an up to four times improvement in drop height to failure and can survive drops up to 1.6 meters (which just happens to be the global human height average), up to 80 percent of the time. Because of this, we believe that consumers will see improved drop performance in devices with Gorilla Glass 5.

“With each successive generation of Corning Gorilla Glass, we have taken cover glass technology to new levels. Gorilla Glass 5 is no exception, extending Corning’s advantage in drop performance over competitive glasses,” said John Bayne, vice president and general manager, Corning Gorilla Glass. “With many real-world drops occurring from between waist and shoulder height, we knew improving drop performance would be an important and necessary advancement.”

For nearly 10 years, Gorilla Glass has been the world’s leading cover glass solution in the consumer electronics market. Today, Gorilla Glass is the cover glass of choice for device manufacturers around the globe with over 40 major brands designing Gorilla Glass into more than 1,800 product models totaling 4.5 billion devices since its launch in 2007.
