Device Customization with Vibrant Gorilla Glass

Creative possibilities for manufacturers

The cover glass innovation that helped launch a smartphone revolution continues to create new possibilities for mobile-device consumers while forging new revenue streams for Corning.

Vibrant Corning® Gorilla® Glass – debuting on Acer's new Chromebook 14 for Work – lets manufacturers offer devices decorated with multi-color, high-resolution, photo-quality images, printed on the industry's most durable cover glass solution.

"Corning's proprietary technology is opening up a new realm of creative possibilities in branding and decoration for Acer and other mobile consumer electronic devices," said John Bayne, vice president, Corning Gorilla Glass.

Using proprietary Inkjet Printing Technology, Vibrant Gorilla Glass lets manufacturers create differentiation and make their products stand out. It also helps meet the existing demand for customization coming from consumers.

"Combining expertise in advanced glass with breakthrough ink, equipment, and processing capabilities, Corning is changing the game."

Making new device designs possible

People's devices are becoming more and more integrated into their daily lives. That means there is a growing desire to have those devices visually reflect users' personalities. This has created a strong market for customization, which you can see in handsets and laptops. Many people are using unique covers and skins. But existing solutions have drawbacks in quality and durability. Our Inkjet technology allows device customization that doesn't exist today.

Combining expertise in advanced glass with breakthrough ink, equipment, and processing capabilities, Corning is changing the game. Manufacturers now have the opportunity to decorate their smartphones, tablets, and laptops with photo-realistic images and designs at a resolution equivalent to high-quality prints on paper. What's more, because the image is printed on Corning's industry-leading cover glass, the image will remain as durable, vivid, and beautiful as the glass it is printed on.

Going far beyond alternative, traditional screen-printing technologies, Vibrant Corning Gorilla Glass provides outstanding resolution and sharpness, requires shorter processing times, and produces less waste. It is preferable to laminating a film on cover glass, which has numerous drawbacks, including increased thickness, cost and processing. Of course, Gorilla Glass beats decorated films that can be easily torn or damaged.

Corning will launch Vibrant Gorilla Glass through specific design collaborations with device makers. The company is helping Acer target the Taiwan market with devices sporting regionally relevant imagery. Brands are looking at markets with brand loyalty.

"The vision is to allow consumers to eventually upload their own unique photo and create the ultimate device personalization."

A Vibrant Future

In the future, we hope to continue to explore new possibilities with more device manufacturers. We hope to then work with manufacturers to be able to offer consumers the option to choose customization as part of their online orders. The vision is to allow consumers to eventually upload their own unique photo and create the ultimate device personalization.

Beyond these collaborations with manufacturers, we hope to work directly with the chief marketing officers (CMOs) of leading companies that want to express their own brand. For example, a company could advertise on laptops or notebooks by doing a run with their logo as a promotion or giveaway. In the future, we hope to continue to explore new possibilities with more device manufacturers. The vision is to allow consumers to eventually upload their own unique photo and create the ultimate device personalization.

Always tough, always innovating

With this announcement, Corning is again upping the capabilities of manufacturers while improving the way consumers interact with their devices.

In terms of the image quality, Vibrant Corning Gorilla Glass offers manufacturers multi-color printing with the durability that is not currently available today.

"You're getting images that really burst off your devices in a way you never thought possible – Vibrant Gorilla Glass brings your personal images to life," Scott Forester, director, Gorilla Glass Innovations, said. "And, the image you know and love is protected by tough Gorilla Glass so it will retain that high quality."

"Corning is creating a user experience that just didn't exist before."
