Coresix provides first Willow Glass distribution center for barrier applications

Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) today introduced Coresix Precision Glass Inc. as a value-added reseller for Corning® Willow™ Glass.

Coresix, located in Williamsburg, Va., will distribute the ultra-slim flexible glass to the precise specifications of customers in a variety of industries. Inventory is in place at Coresix with initial orders for Willow Glass expected to focus on barrier applications, such as photovoltaic modules. As a distribution channel, Coresix has an extensive group of customers spanning a variety of industries, presenting new opportunities for Corning.

The properties and attributes of Willow Glass make it an ideal thin and flexible hermetic barrier, helping to protect sensitive components from damaging moisture and oxygen while also acting as a structural barrier for a number of applications. In collaboration with Coresix, Corning will be able to broaden applications for Willow Glass and enable hermetically sealed photovoltaic modules and other future applications.

Willow Glass is a chemically inert, thermally stable, and optically pure glass manufactured at thicknesses that create unique properties, most notably the ability of the glass to be flexed. Corning has a long history of working with customers to introduce revolutionary glass solutions and will continue to leverage this experience to bring Willow Glass into new applications.

Coresix is an industry leader in the development, manufacture, and fabrication of precision glass components for customers in a wide array of markets, including photonics, display, biotechnologies, imaging, opto-electronics, replication, lithography, office automation, sensor, and semiconductor. From research and development to full production, Coresix products are made to exacting dimensional and spectral tolerances using virtually any glass material available. The Coresix product line evolves and adapts to the continually changing markets it serves, specializing in providing glass substrates to the highest levels of surface quality and cleanliness.

“Working with ultra-thin glass for many years, we feel our manufacturing capabilities, tailored to the unique specifications of our customers, provide an ideal complement to the product attributes of Willow Glass. Coresix is excited to be engaged in the development of numerous potential opportunities enabled by the large format, high quality and superior flexibility that Willow Glass offers,” said Al Ralston, sales manager of Coresix Precision Glass.

“We are pleased to work with Coresix as our first distribution center for Willow Glass. Our customers value Willow Glass for its thin, lightweight, and hermetic-sealing qualities,” said Gene Smith, commercial director and program manager, Corning Glass Technologies. “Corning is excited to see how manufacturers find unique and creative ways to take advantage of the inherent qualities of Willow Glass for a number of applications.”
