WEEE Compliance Information for Corning Customers in Norway

Norway implemented a regulatory system for managing waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in 1999. Norway is not a member of the European Union and is not obligated to follow the EC WEEE Directive. Although the WEEE Regulations in Norway are similar to the EC WEEE Directive for household equipment, they place quite different obligations on the management of business equipment. In particular, the current WEEE Regulations do not allow producers to establish their own collection and recycling systems. Instead, the WEEE Regulations require all producers of business equipment to join collective compliance systems which are operated by third parties in Norway.

Corning products are sold in Norway by distributors. The distributor acts as the importer of the equipment into Norway. Thus the distributor has the legal responsibility to:

  • Register with the Norwegian Pollution Control Authority (SFT) as the WEEE producer in Norway.
  • To join a collective compliance system in Norway.

As part of the regulatory system in Norway, the Ministry of Environment has approved two large collective compliance schemes (El-Retur and RENAS which between them account for 94% of WEEE collection and recycling in Norway) and a smaller compliance scheme (Eurovironment which is run by 14 producers of IT equipment).
