The Flexibility of Corning® Willow™ Glass: Enabling the Next Ultra-Slim Displays

October 2012
After launching this summer, Corning® Willow™ Glass is drawing interest for its remarkable flexibility. But its additional advantage is for manufacturers wanting to make electronic devices thinner, lighter-weight, and with higher-resolution displays.

While the flexibility of Willow Glass is its show-stopping feature at industry events, the glass’s flexibility comes into play during the manufacturing process. As it bends and travels through a series of rollers, Willow Glass enables display manufacturers to apply coatings and functional components to the glass in an efficient, roll-to-roll process rather than on flat, rigid pieces. Learn more about the roll-to-roll process by watching this video.

While the flexible benefits of Willow Glass may not be self-evident to consumers, manufacturers will have greater design flexibility for future devices, allowing decreased thickness, explained Dr. Dipak Chowdhury, division vice president and Willow Glass program director.  At a thinness of just 0.1 millimeters, Willow Glass provides manufacturers with a weight and thickness savings of up to half the device.

Within a smartphone or tablet, Corning’s advanced glass technologies – such as EAGLE XG® Slim Glass and Corning Lotus™ Glass – could work together with Willow Glass to help enable a thin, high resolution device complete with vivid colors and heightened touch sensitivity.

There’s one thing Willow Glass won’t do, explained Chowdhury– it won’t replace Corning® Gorilla® Glass. Instead, Gorilla Glass will continue to be the cover glass of choice to help protect sleek new electronic devices – making it the outermost layer within a smartphone or tablet.
