Corning Singapore Bikes for Charity

May 11, 2018

When Singapore's popular cycling challenge OCBC Cycle 2018 Sportive Ride attracted about 6,500 competitors last week, Corning was there to show company spirit and raise money for a cause.

In fact, it was the moment the Corning Cycling family was waiting for all year. Team members woke up bright and early on Sunday morning, gearing up with Corning colors and bicycles lit with the World's First Laser Light Charge & Sync Cable featuring Corning® Fibrance® Light-Diffusing Fiber. In all, 21 Corning Singapore employees set off to participate in another fun and challenging OCBC Cycle 2018 Sportive Ride.

With the first wave off, the cyclists started energetically from Singapore National Stadium, heading westwards towards Pasir Panjang terminal before heading eastwards towards the daunting Benjamin Sheares Bridge, ending back at the National Stadium, covering Singapore's breathtaking skyline. Enduring the summer heat and high level of humidity, all Corning's cyclists completed the ride covering more than 1,000 kilometers within 2 1/2 hours. The first cyclist, Roxana Sara Ghadessy, had a strong finish at 1:33:16.

This year, in conjunction with the event, Corning Cares accepted donation pledges in the form of innovative challenges. Pledges received this year include $3 per kilometer if completed within one hour, 40 minutes; $10 for each employee who participates and finishes, $1 - $2 per kilometer per Corning Cyclist. Anticipating the creative challenges from the pledges with hopes to raise as much funds for the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC), the team started their preparation early this year by initiating weekly cycling trainings on Friday evenings. With the team's perseverance, Corning Cares has received $6,500 cash donation for the SDSC.

Since we started participating in this annual event last year, cycling has brought the team closer – together, we bonded over the love of cycling (and food after each social cycling session), explored Singapore and its nature on our trusty bikes, and encouraged each other to achieve our personal stretch goals. At the same time, we've also raised awareness of and funds for the SDSC while donning Corning colors, proudly representing Corning® Gorilla® Glass – "Always Tough, Always Innovating."
