Four decades of innovation in substrates and filters contribute to a healthier world

Take a breath in. Now, let it out. If you keep doing that for a whole day, you’ll breathe close to 3,000 gallons of air – that’s enough to fill a tanker truck! In response to Congress’ Clean Air Act in the early 1970s, Corning scientists introduced a powerful and life-changing way to use its expertise in materials – the invention of extruded cellular ceramic substrates found in catalytic converters. Later, they took the idea further and developed the cellular ceramic particulate filter. Today, those components help automotive manufacturers meet strict regulations set forth by environmental agencies around the globe, such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

With many types of cellular ceramic substrates, we provide the means necessary to form world-class pollution control systems for light-duty passenger cars, heavy-duty trucks, and construction equipment.  Each substrate helps convert harmful pollutants into non-toxic gases such as water vapor – even when working under demanding conditions. 

Our ceramic particulate filters work in tandem with the cellular substrate, trapping soot or other particulate matter before it is emitted from a vehicle. And like the cellular substrate, Corning’s particulate filters are created using our patented extrusion process.

Our role as the leading supplier of substrates and filters for the world’s major manufacturers of gasoline and diesel engines is driven by our outstanding performance in quality, delivery, technology, and cost. And companies have taken notice. Corning recently received a 2014 Masters of Quality Supplier Award from Daimler Trucks North America for being a top-quality supplier for Freightliner and Western Star truck brands.

You won’t find these products just in vehicles, though. Corning’s product line extends further, capturing stationary emissions from power plants, refineries, chemical processing plants, and other industrial applications.

With this patented technology, we continue to help people breathe easier. Cars today are 98 percent cleaner when it comes to smog-forming pollutants than they were in 1970. And you can be certain we will continue to improve our products going forward to help clean the air.
