Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) today introduced a new generation of gasoline particulate filters for automotive emissions control, Corning® DuraTrap® GC 2.0 filters. These filters help new gasoline-engine vehicles, including hybrids, achieve even lower levels of fine particulate tailpipe emissions as regulatory limits tighten. Corning is ramping production to supply industry-leading automakers that selected these filters for several 2021 model year vehicles.
Advancing automotive emissions regulations in Europe and China specify strict particulate number limits for vehicles’ tailpipe emissions. Vehicles must meet these limits under real-world driving conditions from the first mile driven. To help automakers further reduce particulate tailpipe emissions to meet these new requirements, DuraTrap GC 2.0 filter walls feature a unique ceramic microstructure that significantly enhances filtration efficiency. This filtration improvement is achieved without impacting engine performance or vehicle fuel consumption.
“This next generation of our gasoline particulate filters delivers superior exhaust filtration and advances automakers’ ability to achieve even lower emissions,” said Hal Nelson, senior vice president and general manager, Automotive. “Introducing these filters to the automotive market is a great example of how we can make cars even cleaner and safer with innovations in emissions control and engineering.”
Corning’s first generation of DuraTrap GC filters, which launched in 2016, enabled the first wave of reduction in particulate emissions from gasoline engines in Europe and China. Corning’s next-generation filters are helping automakers prepare for the next progression of emissions regulations in those regions.
Corning began production of DuraTrap GC 2.0 filters this year at its U.S. manufacturing facility in Erwin, New York, and is already planning to add additional global production capacity to support customer commitments.
Corning has more than 100 years of experience in the automotive industry, helping drive the trend toward cleaner, safer, and more connected vehicles. Building on almost five decades of leadership in clean-air technologies, Corning continually innovates its advanced cellular ceramic substrates and ceramic particulate filters for gasoline and diesel emissions control, helping customers meet new emissions standards and enable cleaner air worldwide. Corning is also enhancing vehicle exteriors and interiors with technical glass innovations that can enable sophisticated in-vehicle display designs and lightweight, damage-resistant windows.
