Alternative School Excels in STEM

The Alternative School for Math and Science opened in January 2004, the result of a vision by a group of concerned citizens, parents and educators to provide a middle-level learning program that was academically excellent, developmentally responsive, and socially equitable.

Corning Incorporated played a key role by availing a former school building on Corning’s Southside the company was leasing. Seven years later, the company purchased the building and, in 2012, fully funded a 35,000 square-foot expansion to accommodate the growing number of students in grades six through eight. The school originally opened with 20 students, and has grown to approximately 130 students annually.

"At the Alternative School for Math and Science we work very hard to meet the needs of every individual student."

— Kim Frock, Administrative Head of School, The Alternative School for Math and Science

At the beginning of the 2014-15 school year, ASMS became the first independent school in the U.S. to adopt the full Samsung School solution across all grades.  An integrated one-to-one learning platform combining Samsung Galaxy tablets, interactive whiteboards and other technology, melded together with powerful interactive classroom software, Samsung School is helping ASMS to take its interactive, participatory learning model to a whole new level of excellence. The deployment is the result of collaboration between Samsung and Corning Incorporated, who share a long-standing partnership in the development of display technologies.

Since opening, ASMS has met high academic standards with 75 percent of students going on to pursue courses of study in science, technology, engineering, and math. That is significantly higher than the national average of 16 percent.
