Greenhouse Gas Emissions

We record and report our worldwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions with The Climate Registry, a nonprofit collaboration among North American states, provinces, territories and Native Sovereign Nations that sets consistent and transparent standards to calculate, verify and publicly report GHG emissions into a single registry.

Our worldwide inventories were developed using The Climate Registry’s General Reporting Protocol which follows the same principles as these of the World Resource Institute/World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WRI/WBCSD) GHG Protocol -A Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard (Revised Edition).  These company-wide inventories include GHG emissions from the following sources:

  • Direct emissions from stationary combustion of fossil fuels
  • Indirect emissions from the use of electricity
  • Direct emissions resulting from manufacturing or processing of chemicals and raw materials
  • Fugitive emissions resulting from the intentional and unintentional releases of hydrofluorocarbons
  • Direct mobile emissions resulting from Corning's aviation fleet and motor vehicles

The gases reported in the inventory include all six internationally-recognized greenhouse gases regulated under the Kyoto Protocol:

  • Carbon dioxide
  • Methane
  • Nitrous oxide
  • Hydrofluorocarbons
  • Perfluorocarbons
  • Sulfur hexafluoride

Seminars

Our Corporate Environmental Control group sponsors internal environmental seminars for the environmental specialists who work at Corning facilities. These seminars deliver a consistent message regarding our environmental mission and vision across all business units and geographic locations within the company.

They also provide a venue for professional training, networking and the sharing of environmental best management practices across the company.

The seminars are held three times a year, each in a separate region – including Europe and Africa, Asia Pacific and North America – to enable employees in those locations to participate.
