HPFS® 7980 for Germicidal Irradiation

HPFS® 7980 for Germicidal Irradiation

UVC light is a short-wavelength (200 – 280 nm) ultraviolet light that breaks apart the DNA of microorganisms, leaving them unable to function or reproduce. It has long been recognized as an effective method for deactivating pathogens on surfaces, in the air or in liquids.

Widespread diseases, most recently the COVID-19 pandemic, have highlighted the urgency of implementing solutions to minimize the spread of harmful pathogens, and utilization of UVC light is becoming more common.

Many new devices are now being commercialized which utilize ultraviolet germicidal irradiation, or UVGI. These UVGI devices require components that transmit UVC wavelengths efficiently, making Corning HPFS® an ideal material for these applications. Corning HPFS 7980 not only has high UVC transmission, but it is also available in large sized format (up to 1,900 mm), so it can be used for transmitting energy from sources such as mercury vapor lamps (λ~254), LEDs (λ~265-280), or excimer lamps (λ~222nm).
