Traditional Small Cell

The SpiderCloud® Enterprise Radio Access Network (E-RAN) system makes use of Ethernet infrastructure for connectivity and power. Radio Nodes are about the size of a Wi-Fi AP and are connected to the Services Node over a standard Ethernet.

Local Area Network (LAN) utilizes Power over Ethernet plus “PoE+” from the Ethernet switch to power the Radio Nodes. Mobile operators can build a dedicated Ethernet LAN for Radio Nodes, or share the existing enterprise LAN using Virtual LAN (VLAN) technology.

By usage of standard enterprise Ethernet and a Radio Node installation process that is similar to enterprise Wi-Fi, the very large pool of Wi-Fi trained installation companies can now install cellular technology. The cost of physical installation is significantly reduced as compared to telecommunications technologies that require specialized labor and expensive coax cables. The optimal installations share the existing enterprise transport infrastructure to enable faster installation and reduce capital construction costs for materials.

In the building’s main Telecom closet, the E-RAN’s services node installs in a standard 19-inch equipment rack and only requires one Rack Unit (1.75-inch) of vertical space. The services node uses two 110VAC outlets for its redundant power supplies and only generate 512 BTUs of heat per hour. All the headend power and space demands of earlier generations of indoor cellular equipment are removed with E-RAN.

Backhaul is also eased by E-RAN as it only needs a quality IP path to the mobile core. This can be in the form of Internet (provided the last mile has enough headroom for mobile traffic), MPLS, Metro Ethernet, or other private IP. Tough customer situations can use internet as a permanent solution or as a bridge solution to satisfy needs until a private IP connection is delivered.

We solve many of the high external CapEx and OpEx costs posed by legacy Base Stations (signal source).

DAS Headend

The SpiderCloud® E-RAN Radio Nodes have the capacity of a typical Base Station sector. Overall project costs of a typical OEM Base Station vs E-RAN is very favorable with the E-RAN about 30% of the cost of multi-sector multi-frequency Base Station. Also, Corning has developed mounting rails to enable an array of radio nodes to be mounted in a DAS equipment room and feed a Corning® Everon® headend. The services node, ethernet switch, and array of radio nodes are all co-located in eight vertical Rack Units of space as shown in the photo.
