Employees from Corning Incorporated’s Manufacturing, Technology, and Engineering (MT&E) division recently had an impact on some possible future scientists, mathematicians, and engineers.
MT&E’s Corporate Environmental Control (CEC) and Capital Project and Facilities Engineering (CPF) groups sponsored a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) night for students in kindergarten through fifth grade at Bemus Point Central School District (BPCSD) in Bemus Point, New York, on Thursday, April 6.
“This was a great opportunity to see some of our future scientists, engineers, and mathematicians have an evening out with their moms and dads, engaged in various 20-minute projects,” said Tom Capek, Vice President - Chief Engineer for Manufacturing, Technology, and Engineering at Corning. “We at Corning are always very supportive of volunteerism and give back to our local communities.”
According to John Novotny, Director of CEC and CPF, and BPCSD School Board President, about 50 students participated in the night with their parents. Eight work stations were set up featuring mini-projects focused on STEAM topics, such as drawing challenges, building paper rockets, and floating pennies on a boat made from tin foil.
“When the school board asked me about Corning sponsoring their STEAM night, I brought the idea to Tom, who is a huge support of our volunteerism,” said Novotny. “These are kids who may eventually pursue science, engineering, or math degrees.”
CEC and CPF also presented each student with a Corning backpack, which event organizers from the school filled with other treats.
Capek added, “MT&E will continue to sponsor such events to raise awareness of STEAM. We hope to see these kids go on to college and someday work for a great company, such as Corning.”
