Critical factors in the success of any optical MEMS component are packaging and fiber optic lens alignment costs. Small form factor MEMS components such as protection switches and VOA's require the integration of fiber optic lenses with the MEMS silicon ship itself. This paper discusses a fiber optic lens design, specifically engineered for use with silicon micromachined optical devices, that enables the use of passive fiber optic lens alignment to significantly reduce component assembly cots.
