OLEDs are highly sensitive to moisture and air, the technology has been limited by the challenge of how to seal out both. Early generation OLED products have been sealed using epoxy, which requires a desiccant for the absorption of permeated moisture and air. The drawback to this method is lifespan: eventually, the desiccant becomes saturated and the moisture and air damage the OLED display. The use of a desiccant also requires that a cavity be etched in the cover glass, adding complexity to the manufacturing process.
