Corning Long-Haul Optical Fibers Enable Advanced 100G Solution Over-Single Span 250-Kilometer Network
CORNING, N.Y. | Corning Incorporated | марта 07, 2011

Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) will demonstrate a very long single-span system of long-haul optical fibers with Ciena (NASDAQ: CIEN) at OFC/NFOEC, March 6-10 in Los Angeles. The demonstration will feature an advanced 100G coherent solution with 250 kilometers (km) single-span transmission built with commercially available equipment.  This solution is attractive to network operators who want to reduce the number of remote amplifier sites, along with the associated costs for powering and security.

The 250 km-span configuration is possible using Corning® SMF-28® ULL optical fiber, the lowest-attenuation ITU-T G.652-compliant fiber, and Ciena’s ActivFlex 6500 Packet-Optical Platform.  The Ciena platform uses integrated coherent 100G optics and an ActivSpan Common Photonic Layer line system with Raman amplification at the terminal sites. All components are commercially available today, and the extended single-span transmission system operates without fixed dispersion compensation or in-line amplification.

At OFC/NFOEC last year, Corning and Ciena demonstrated 100G transmission over 1500 km with 125 km amplifier spans. “We are delighted to team once again with Ciena to demonstrate extended single-span reach in a 100G solution with commercially available products,” said Barry Linchuck, division vice president and director, worldwide marketing, Corning Optical Fiber. “Our ongoing innovations ensure our long-haul optical fiber products continuously improve to meet our customers’ current and future requirements. With our low-loss fiber, network operators can extend optical reach at very high data rates and make their network scalable for the higher capacities that will be required to meet growing bandwidth demand.”

Corning SMF-28 ULL fiber provides up to 25 percent advantage in span length compared to legacy standard single-mode fiber, and has the best optical characteristics in the G.652 category for operating with coherent high-capacity transmission systems. It has been commercially available since 2007 and deployed in many countries around the world.
