Corning Optical Communications Australia, part of Corning Incorporated’s (NYSE:GLW) Telecommunications segment, today announced that Corning has been selected as a primary NBN Co supplier of optical fibre cable and hardware for the NBN network. A world leader in the manufacture of fibre optic connectivity solutions for communications networks, Corning has committed to further expand its Australian-based manufacturing and assembly capacity to meet the needs of the national broadband rollout.

Corning and NBN Co have signed a contract for the supply of optical cable and hardware that could be valued at up to $1.2 billion over the contract period with an initial purchase commitment of $400 million.

The size and scope of the NBN project will enable Corning to invest in both new equipment and technologies for our Clayton facility as well as create a significant number of additional jobs, increased people development and extensive skills training. Corning is fully committed to the NBN roll-out and we look forward to supporting Australia’s vision and leadership in broadband deployment.”

Dittrich said that, in connection with this contract, Corning will invest approximately $25 million in its Clayton, Melbourne facility, related equipment and personnel training. Corning currently employs 115 workers at its Clayton facility. In the peak years of the NBN deployment, Corning Optical Communications Australia expects to add as many as 300 to 400 jobs at the location. Plans call for Corning to increase its productive activity at the Clayton facility by 3x or 4x in connection with the NBN deployment.   

Specifically, Corning will invest in additional local cable plant capacity and equipment to manufacture FlexNAP™ terminal distribution system with RPX™ ribbon cable for aerial installations and ALTOS® ribbon cable featuring the industry’s best performing enhanced low-loss ITU-T G.652.D compliant SMF-28e+® LL fiber for underground installations and to localise the manufacture of fibre distribution hubs. The FlexNAP system is a state-of-the-art fibre optic cabling system in which network access points are factory-terminated at customer-specified locations along the length of a fibre optic cable. Connectorised terminals and customer drops are then connected to these tap points in the field in a matter of seconds without any specialist skills or equipment. Additionally, in an effort to ensure readiness of supply, Corning will provide some preconnectorised outside plant hardware products from other global manufacturing facilities.
