Corning Receives Cornerstone Award from Broadband Properties Magazine for Outstanding Deployment of Fiber-to-the-Premises Networks
CORNING, N.Y., September 12, 2007 – Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) announced today that it was selected by Broadband Properties magazine as a 2007 Cornerstone Award recipient. The awards, presented annually, recognize achievements in the deployment of fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) networks. These networks include a variety of residential multi-family and single-family developments, planned communities as well as deployments by municipalities, utilities and independent telephone companies. A distinguished committee of industry leaders, analysts and writers selected the award recipients.
"Each year, we acknowledge the very best organizations in advancing outstanding fiber-to-the-premises networks and ultimately providing broadband to a wider audience," said Steven Ross, editor in chief, Broadband Properties magazine. "We are proud to recognize Corning and hope their programs will become a model for many other organizations in the U.S. and abroad."
Corning received the award for its recently announced nanoStructures™ optical fiber design, which solves a technical challenge long faced by telecommunications carriers installing fiber-to-the-home networks. The optical fiber-based technology allows the cabled fiber to be bent around very tight corners with virtually no signal loss. These improved attributes will enable telecommunications carriers to economically offer true high-speed Internet, voice and HDTV services to virtually all commercial and residential (apartment and condominium) buildings. Current optical fiber installations lose signal strength and effectiveness when bent around corners and routed through a building, making it difficult and expensive to run fiber all the way to customers' homes.
"Receiving the Cornerstone Award is an honor for Corning, and it serves as recognition of the game-changing technology Corning introduced earlier this year," said Bob Whitman, FTTX Program Manager, North America, Corning Cable Systems, who accepted the award for Corning. "The nanoStructures technology allows us to create optical fiber that is over 100 times more bendable than standard fibers, making installation of FTTH networks simpler than ever before."
Since 2004, Cornerstone Awards have included recognition for the most notable deployments of FTTP in the U.S. and abroad. Each year, Broadband Properties bestows Cornerstone Awards to private developments, municipalities, communities, companies, and individuals with outstanding accomplishments in the area of delivering telecommunications for the benefit of the end user.
