Corning launches SunSensors® HPC
Avon, France , May 09, 2008 – Corning Launches SunSensors® HPCTM
Photochromic Coating Technology to the European Market
AVON, FRANCE –– Corning Ophthalmic today announced the European launch of SunSensors® HPC™ (high performance photochromic coating), a new plastic photochromic solution in its SunSensors® product line. SunSensors HPC technology can be applied to a broad range of materials including polycarbonate, 1.60 index and 1.67 index plastic lenses. It not only offers high clarity, but also achieves one of the highest levels of performance for darkening and fading speed, displaying a gray dark state transmission of 11 percent and reaching 65 percent transmission after only five minutes of fading time.
“Corning has shown dedication to the photochromic market since introducing its first photochromic glass in 1968,” said Pierre-Jean Baron, general manager, Corning Ophthalmic. “With millions of pairs of SunSensors lenses sold worldwide, we have intensified our technical collaboration with Tokuyama on plastic photochromic lenses, continuing to push this fast-growing segment forward.”
“Through SunSensors® HPC™ technology, we extend our plastic photochromic expertise and technology base to coating, offering the largest product portfolio on the market,” said Baron. “For our customers, this range of photochromic solutions, plus Corning’s expertise and worldwide support, is a major benefit.”
SunSensors HPC is available in two base colors: gray or brown. The technology also provides the following benefits:
• 100 percent UVA and UVB blockage
• UV400 protection on 1.6 index and 1.67 index materials
• Compatibility with anti-reflect and hard-coating treatment
• Suitability for “free-form backside” progressive lenses
The new SunSensors HPC technology, featured on 1.60 index lenses, will be presented at MIDO - International Optics, Optometry and Ophthalmology Exhibition, May 9-12 in Milan. “Polycore Optical is proud to collaborate in the development and marketing of these premium photochromic lenses from Corning Incorporated,” said Hashim Osman, sales and marketing director of Polycore Optical.
SunSensors plastic photochromic range solutions include:
• SunSensors HPC: High performance photochromic coating ideal for high indices. New coating technology addressing various plastic materials and lens designs.
• SunSensors +™: High-performance photochromic monomer, ideal for rimless frames.
• SunSensors by Corning : High-quality photochromic monomer at an affordable price.
