Corning and Promega Launch Web-based Microarray Tool

Innovative new tool used to verify cDNA labeling efficiency

Acton, Massachusetts, February 2004 - The downstream costs associated with conducting a microarray experiment can be relatively high, especially if there is a flaw in the cDNA labeling process. Corning Incorporated and Promega Corporation introduce a new online tool that allows printing groups and microarray end-users to verify the quality of the cDNA labeling reaction prior to hybridization.

The tool, similar to a mortgage calculator, was designed by Corning Application Scientists in collaboration with Promega Technical Service Scientists. The calculator is an extension of mathematical formulae found in Corning's Pronto!™ Reagent System Instruction Manual.

Based on input spectrophotometry data, the user-friendly calculator will make recommendations on the amount of labeled cDNA to use for hybridization. This tool also includes troubleshooting tips that cover approximately 95% of the potential problems that could arise during the labeling process. If results are not within an acceptable range, it will offer suggestions as to what to check in the process.

"As with any scientific experiment, the key to microarray experiments is reproducibility," said Michael Briggs Ph.D., applications scientist, Corning Life Sciences. "The calculator gives investigators reassurance that their yield of cDNA and the amount incorporation of incorporated nucleotides are within and acceptable range. The labeling reaction is a good place in the microarray process to spend a little extra time to ensure reliable, reproducible results."
