Industry Leaders Team to Deliver First-of-its-Kind Solution
ACTON, M.A. , October 2006 - Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW), a global supplier of scientific laboratory and drug discovery products for more than 90 years, in conjunction with Thermo Electron Corporation and FIBERLite, announced today an innovative sample processing solution that cuts laboratory research processing time in half. The solution seamlessly brings together Thermo's Sorvall® RC-6 Plus super-speed centrifuge and FIBERLite's high-performance carbon fiber rotors with Corning's high-quality disposable centrifuge tubes to create a total sample processing solution. Combined, the three best-of-breed products allow scientists to produce more reliable results faster by enabling researchers to do multiple separations with just one tube.
This is the first product combination of its kind and it is expected to revolutionize the way researchers do preparation work. FIBERLite offers several rotors and carbon fiber, patent pending adaptors built to fit Corning's disposable, pre-sterilized centrifuge tubes. This will allow Thermo's new Sorvall RC-6 Plus to spin at maximum speeds without damaging the tubes. This liberates researchers of the time-consuming and costly task of using multiple tubes for separations during their preparation work. Additionally, by using just one tube during sample processing, valuable samples are protected and at less risk of contamination.
"Our customers are increasingly demanding disposable product solutions that minimize the risk of contamination, thus making their research more accurate," said Steve Wood, division vice president, Commercial Operations, Corning Life Sciences. "Particularly with sample processing, many customers have been reusing pricey non-disposable tubes and attempting to sterilize them on their own," he continued. "The Thermo-FIBERLite-Corning solution uses less-expensive disposable centrifuge tubes, thereby providing scientists with an affordable processing solution that ensures the use of a sterile tube each time. This ultimately increases the potential of reliable results."
"Our customers are constantly seeking solutions that help them accelerate their research efforts," said Billy McKnight, vice president and general manager, Sample Preparation and Separation, Thermo Electron Corporation. "By offering them this unique combined solution comprising best-of-breed products, we are helping them achieve this goal. The Sorvall RC-6 Plus, which offers a capacity of four liters, extreme processing speeds and vacuum-free operation, offers maximum performance. It also works seamlessly with FIBERLite's rotors and Corning's centrifuge tubes to provide researchers with marked improvements in quality and efficiency."
"We are pleased to work with two other industry innovators to deliver a revolutionary technology to the market that lowers the total process cost and directly responds to the needs of customers," said Al Piramoon, president and chief executive officer, FIBERLite.
