New company’s device strategy focuses on bringing premium materials and craftsmanship to millions

Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) announced today that Corning® Gorilla® Glass 5, Corning’s toughest cover glass yet, has been chosen as the cover material for the Essential Phone.

Launched earlier this week, the Essential Phone features a three-sided, borderless display with a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 cover. This is the first device from Essential Products, a newly formed company founded by Andy Rubin, the co-founder of Android.

“We are pleased to collaborate with Andy and the team at Essential as they launch their first smartphone device. Corning Gorilla Glass 5 delivers the best-in-class drop performance for their new smartphone,” said John Bayne, vice president and general manager, Corning Gorilla Glass. “As one of the primary architects of the Android operating system, Andy has had a major impact on the smartphone ecosystem. We see Essential’s choice of Corning as a supplier – and Gorilla Glass 5 as a key material – as a clear indication of the advantage of our products, our brand, and the value we bring to industry innovators like Essential.”

“One of the founding principles of Essential is to deliver premium materials and craftsmanship and the best technology experiences to millions. To develop our new phone, we chose to work with the glass experts at Corning to bring the drop performance and damage resistance of Corning Gorilla Glass 5 to our customer base,” said Andy Rubin, chief executive officer, Essential Products, Inc.

Corning’s lab tests show that Gorilla Glass 5 survives drops onto rough, unforgiving surfaces up to four times better than competitive glass designs. Customers are adopting Corning Gorilla Glass 5 at a rate two times faster than earlier versions of Gorilla Glass over the same time period.
