Incredibly Tough: A Polar Adventure | Sherry Ott and Juliana Dever with the HTC Bolt | Corning Gorilla Glass

Arctic tough! The HTC Bolt™ is the world’s first water-resistant, solid aluminum unibody Android phone. Its 5.5” Quad HD screen features Corning® Gorilla® Glass 5, which performs up to 4X better in drop failure height than competitive glasses.

Across the world, in major zoos, seeing the Polar Bears is by far one of the most popular attractions. But, to see these majestic creatures in their natural habitat — well, you’re best served making the trek 625 miles north of Winnipeg, into the tiny Tundra town of Churchill. Known as the Polar Bear Capital of the World, Churchill is home to about 800 residents, sits on the bank of the Hudson Bay and is in the direct path of migrating Polar Bears from mid-October through November.

Fascinated with the prospect of witnessing Polar Bears in their tough Tundra environment, Actor/producer and travel blogger Juliana Dever and accomplished travel writer and photographer Sherry Ott packed their bags for Churchill.

To document their trip to the icy, cold, wet, windy and rocky Northern Tundra, both Sherry and Juliana brought the new HTC Bolt™ smartphone, featuring Corning® Gorilla® Glass 5. Between its tough, aluminum unibody construction, water resistance and the superior damage resistance of Gorilla® Glass 5, the HTC Bolt™, Juliana and Sherry were both put to the test.

There are no roads to Churchill. It is only accessible by train or plane. The town grew from a remote outpost to a bustling seaport with the construction of the Hudson Bay Railroad and Port of Churchill in the late 1920s. Through much of the 1950s and 1960s, the town was a thriving military community. Today, it’s a destination for adventurists from across the world.

Upon arrival, Sherry and Juliana were both greeted by freezing temperatures and blustery winds. A sure foot and the tough HTC Bolt were both required to navigate the icy ground with confidence. Rugged, no-nonsense guides set the stage and the groundrules for exploring the Tundra for Polar Bears, as well as safely navigating the town. Polar Bears are revered in Churchill, but are also handled with steely respect to keep interactions with humans to an absolute minimum.

The October and November Polar Bear migration finds its way near Churchill where the fresh water of the Churchill River is first to form ice, providing a critical pathway for the Bears to get back on the ice and into the Hudson Bay where they can resume hunting and eating. Which is to say, these migrating Polar Bears are really hungry.

A Tundra Buggy® would provide Sherry and Juliana the opportunity to get out on the Tundra and into the Polar Bear habitat. The behemoth vehicles, stand over 13-ft. tall and are uniquely suited for traversing the rugged Tundra while providing safe viewing. In the town of Churchill, Polar Bear Patrols are on 24/7 alert. Joining these Patrols was an added adventure — especially on Halloween night, when the children of Churchill were out trick n’ treating, and Polar Bear Patrols were out in full force, on the lookout for errant Polar Bears who may be straying too close to town.

Tough enough for the Arctic Tundra: The HTC Bolt™ featuring Corning® Gorilla® Glass 5

Tough enough for the Arctic Tundra

Snow, ice, rocks, high winds, freezing waters and sub-zero temperatures — not exactly a smartphone’s best friends. Yet, the HTC Bolt™ was certainly up for the task. As the world’s first water-resistant aluminum unibody Android phone, the HTC Bolt™ is built for speed in any conditions. Even better, the HTC Bolt™ 5.5” Quad HD screen features tough Corning® Gorilla® Glass 5. The very same glass that raised the bar for protection against drops higher than ever, surviving 1.6-meter drops onto rough surfaces up to 80% of the time. That’s up to 4X better in drop failure height than competitive glasses. Which is to say that when you’re taking advantage of the HTC Bolt™ world-class camera, shooting 4k video, swiping its screen in glove mode, or enjoying some tunes through its revolutionary, dual-adaptive USB-C earphones — you have the drop protection you need, plus the damage resistance, optical clarity, and touch sensitivity that made Gorilla® Glass famous.
