药物发明竞赛的幕后

In the highly competitive race to bring new drugs to market, the pharmaceutical indisuty is constantly looking for new approaches in drug development. Building process efficiencies and containing costs is critical in this market since drug discovery is expensive and time consuming. Corning’s researchers help provide effective solutions to an industry where time-saving techniques can save countless lives.

Joydeep Lahiri, a Corning researcher who specializes in organic and biochemical technologies, is one of the people in our research and development organization who can make that happen.

Early in his career, Lahiri focused on academic research, but the advancements of Corning’s industrial research attracted his interest. “I never really thought about doing industrial research,” he said. “But working at Corning appealed to me. As a ‘materials science company’ with broad expertise in organic and inorganic processes, Corning’s technical competencies demonstrated the potential for a real synergy of materials science, photonics and biology.”

Lahiri and his group’s research efforts at Corning are looking for new ways to provide better, more comprehensive drug screening information; identify and eliminate failures early in the drug discovery process; overcome previous technological limitations; and streamline the process of drug discovery.

Lahiri leverages Corning’s broad expertise to develop more efficient, accurate ways to capture valuable bio-information early in the research process. He is also focusing on ways to eliminate extra steps in the research process such as end-user DNA labeling, which will not only save time but will minimize the changes of human error – two valuable advancements in drug discovery research.

“As researchers, we are not just idea generations – we are partners with Corning businesses and work must be able to be successfully commercialized,” said Lahiri. In other words, he strives to put ideas to work through practical applications.

Lahiri’s accomplishments, and those of his colleagues, have been cited in key industry journals, including Chemical and Engineering News, Nature-Science Online, BioArray News, Analytical Chemistry and Nature Biotechnology.

Corning produces the world’s most comprehensive line of lab tools for life science research. Our core technical competencies include polymer science, biochemistry and molecular biology, glass melting and forming, surface modification and characterization science. Our technical expertise seems well suited for the creation of applications and tools to enable drug discover – research that makes a difference.
