Corning in China
Our growth in China has been extraordinary. As recently as 1998, the China operation had fewer than 100 employees and no manufacturing plants. To date, Corning has invested more than US$3 billion in Greater China, with eight manufacturing plants and 3,000 employees focused in the telecommunications, information display and automotive industries.

On October 28, 2005, Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) hosted a grand opening ceremony to commemorate the official inauguration of its China (Shanghai) regional headquarters and its shared services center for financial transactions. This designation as a regional headquarters provides the company with a new platform for business growth and gives us more choices in structuring our business. It also enables us to provide a wider range of services for Corning entities in the region. In addition to the Shanghai headquarters, Corning maintains offices in Beijing, Taipei and Hong Kong.
Corning’s investments in China align well with emerging market trends in the region, and are focused in the telecommunications, display and environmental technology industries.
China is a key driver of telecommunications growth throughout the world. Since the 1990s, Corning has teamed with the Chinese to build strong, local capabilities to supply telecommunications products to China and other Asian markets. Corning’s wholly owned telecommunications businesses in China include Corning (Shanghai) Optical Fiber Co., Ltd. and Corning Cable Systems (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. In addition, Corning participates in two telecommunications equity ventures in China – Beijing CCS Optical Fiber Cable Co., Ltd. and Chengdu CCS Optical Fiber Cable Co., Ltd
China also provides strong market opportunities for LCD products, driven by the growth in the ownership of personal computers and LCD TVs . Corning Display Technologies has played a key role in the development of this industry throughout Asia. We serve the Chinese market through our manufacturing facilities in Korea, Japan, Taiwan and the United States.
Spurred on by the tremendous growth of car ownership in China, Corning has been steadily increasing its investment in automotive products. In 2000, Corning Environmental Technologies began manufacturing ceramic substrates for mobile emission control systems in Shanghai, serving as a local supplier to Asia's growing markets.
