Interactive Design Course for Multimode and Single-mode Optical Local Area Networks
Description
This optical design course targets customers who desire an in-depth knowledge of optical local area networks. The design course was written by experienced system engineers who work with consultants and end-users daily to meet their optical network requirements. This four-day course covers all aspects of successful fiber optic system design from network protocols and configurations to optical cabling, industry communications standards, cable and fiber count selection, hardware selection, splicing/termination methods, and cable system testing and documentation. All that is learned is put into practice through several intensive case studies.
This course incorporates case studies requiring the student to build real fiber optic cabling systems designs; these designs start out simple and grow in complexity as the course progresses. This work is completed simulating a real world environment for systems design. This means that maps, drawings, specification sheets, installation procedures, spreadsheets, and other custom built computer-based design tools are used by the students in to create real systems designs. All the tools and materials required for this are supplied by Corning; this includes: (but is not limited to) a USB flash drive, drawings, maps, line diagrams, splice plans, route diagrams, specification sheets, applications notes, Visio® templates, various white papers, spreadsheet templates and a macro-based bill of materials builder tool. This tool has been custom written by Corning to aid in the design process.
A student may bring a laptop computer to the for the systems designs. The student’s computer must be equipped with Microsoft® Windows XP or newer, Microsoft® Excel® 2003 (or newer), and Adobe® Reader®. The computer must be capable of allowing macros to run in Excel®. Corning will provide a netbook computer to any student without a laptop computer.
