Manufacturing and Packaging
Corning’s “green” commitment requires continuous evaluation of our manufacturing and packaging processes. This includes not only adhering to industry standards and directives, but also exceeding these expectations whenever possible.
Corning Cable Systems adheres to the two European directives, Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), when applicable to our products. For the compliance status of a particular product, contact your Corning Cable Systems Customer Service Representative.
A large number of our global manufacturing facilities have achieved ISO 14001 certification including the Hickory Cable Facility (Hickory, North Carolina) and our Reynosa, Mexico plant. ISO 14001 is an international specification for an environmental management system (EMS).
However, being environmentally conscious entails more than evaluating the components that go into our products or our manufacturing processes. Corning Cable Systems is also evaluating packaging efforts across all product lines in order to minimize the environmental impact of these materials and reduce waste directed to local landfills.
As part of this effort, Corning Cable Systems has instituted an internal recycling program for its cable reels. Used wooden reels are broken down, shipped back to Corning’s manufacturing locations, refurbished and reassembled for re-use. Through this effort alone, Corning Cable Systems has been able to prevent 1.4 million pounds of material annually from going into landfills.
Corning Cable Systems’ composite cable reels contain 100 percent recycled content. Similar to the wood reel recycle program, the composite reels are returned to Corning’s manufacturing location and either re-used without rework, or re-worked and returned to useful service, again eliminating waste that would otherwise be sent to a landfill.
