Fail to manage change and you block the path of progress

Do you manage change by embracing it?  Or does it depend upon the kind of change we’re talking about?  Resistance to ‘bad change’ is probably advisable, but resistance to good old-fashioned ‘progress’ is surely a disaster.  According to one constituency of opinion, bend insensitive fibre, and any other progressive change to the way you cable your datacentre, should be met with fear, uncertainty and doubt.  Unfortunately for them, the passage of time will prove who was right and who was wrong.

If copper were a religion then its two ‘faiths’ would be STP (shielded) and UTP (unshielded).  Anyone mapping the world would see whole regions grouped under one or the other, and from the look of this article, India seems very much in the UTP camp.

Who knows which side of the fault-lines the Icelanders fall?  In a land where geothermal pressure could melt copper in its ducts, fibre would seem the better bet – especially as datacentre capacity building is taking place in progressively larger blocks.

Elsewhere, down-and-out trailer park living seems to be the antedote to datacentre excesses for some investors in Denmark.  Cable TV comes as standard (we guess).

It’s tough for some people out there, but who gets your sympathy?  The desperate people who feel they have no option but to steal copper cabling from the ground, or the thousands of rush-hour commuters who get stranded when it brings a city to a standstill?

Few would have sympathy for a Mac user, unless you are another Mac user who just got access to fibre ports on your Apple device.  Almost just in time for Christmas...

Can a product ever have too much engineering integrity? High end German saloon car makers put the engine in the front, and the gear box and drive train at the rear. Sure, it’s more expensive to build, but it delivers the best driving experience. Few of us would argue with that.

Likewise, German datacentre designers like their copper pairs to be wrapped in a metallic shield – twice. Does that deliver the ultimate twisted pair experience?
