Corning Introduces OptiSplice™ CDS and OptiSplice LID Fusion Splicers

New fusion splice systems provide the optimal solution for field fusion splicing of optical fibers

Munich, Germany, October 31, 2006 – Corning Cable Systems, part of Corning Incorporated’s (NYSE:GLW), telecommunications segment, introduces the OptiSplice CDS and OptiSplice LID Fusion Splicers for the European markets.
The OptiSplice CDS Fusion Splicer is dually equipped with the Core Detection System (CDS™) and Lens-Profile Alignment System (L-PAS™). The CDS splice process is employed in applications where speed, in combination with core-to-core alignment, is of highest priority. This system achieves excellent splicing results and reduces the splice process cycle time including core-to-core alignment to several seconds.
In addition to CDS and L-PAS, the OptiSplice LID Fusion Splicer uses the LID-SYSTEM® (Local light Injection and Detection) technology. The LID-SYSTEM allows for high-precision core-to-core alignment, optimization of each splice process via the automatic fusion-time control AFC™, real measurement of splice loss as well as for attenuation splices. If activated by the user, the LID-SYSTEM additionally offers fiber type detection. In accordance with each requirement, the emphasis along with the CDS or LID mode can be placed on either speed or precision.
Both OptiSplice Fusion Splicers can house three flat 2.3 Ah batteries each for maximum independence from power supply. The compact fusion splice units only weigh about 2.5 kg (without batteries and accessories). The units may alternatively be equipped with the extremely fast heat-shrink oven RapidoShrink or the RapidoCrimp device. The high-speed RapidoShrink oven allows for shrink times of less than 20 seconds with standard heat-shrink splice protectors providing 50 percent less energy consumption compared to standard ovens. Additional accessories such as a splice tray holder and a cleaver may be mounted directly at the unit.
Additional features include the 6.4 inch color screen, the selectable autostart function, the tensile test capability with variable tensile force, storage option for up to 6,000 splice data and a wide variety of preset and individually programmable splice programs. The OptiSplice LID and OptiSplice CDS Fusion Splicers are fully compliant with the requirements 2002/95/EC (RoHS compatibility) and 2002/96/EC (WEEE) of the European Union. All units are CE compliant according to 89/336/EWG (low-voltage directive) and 73/23/EWG (electromagnetic compatibility).
