Corning Employees Aid Earthquake Victims
Corning employees and businesses worldwide showed a remarkable outpouring of support for the Sichuan Region of China which was shattered by a devastating earthquake May 12. Candlelight vigils were held and the combination of gifts from Corning Incorporated Foundation, regional offices and individual employees totaled over $375,000.
Seven different Corning entities in mainland China set up donation centers, with contributions going to Red Cross organizations and the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation. Colleagues in Taiwan also contributed significantly to Red Cross relief efforts, aided by donations from Corning Display Technologies - Taiwan. And in Corning, N.Y., members of the Corning Chinese Association, which represents hundreds of Chinese employees and their families now living in Corning, spearheaded an employee donation effort, collecting approximately $25,000 in just four days.
The Corning Incorporated Foundation has directed two grants to the Give2Asia organization to help restore basic needs to the people of Sichuan Province. And in Chengdu, Corning Cable Systems is contributing cable and manpower to help local authorities rebuild the region’s telecommunications infrastructure.
“We were relieved to learn that our employees are safe, but we know that many members of Corning’s extended family have been affected profoundly by the loss of family, friends and homes,” said Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Wendell P. Weeks. “Although many kilometers separate us, we are united as one company, and this event touches us all.”
