Corning Enterprises Celebrates Anniversary
November 2008
Established in 1983, Corning Enterprises was created as the leadership of Corning Glass Works transitioned from Amo Houghton Jr. to Jamie Houghton. Enterprises’ mission was to facilitate, collaborate, partner and consult with local leaders to improve the economy, strengthen human services and enhance the quality of life in the greater Corning area.
As the largest single employer in the area, Corning has a keen interest in diversifying the local economic base so the area’s economy will be less vulnerable to cycles in Corning’s business performance. Corning Enterprises works closely with the Three Rivers Development agency to help recruit new employers to the area. It also partners with the Gaffer District and the Corning Area Chamber of Commerce to help improve the variety of local retail merchants, restaurants and entertainment.
Corning Enterprises also collaborates with state and local government agencies to secure public grants and other funding for local projects. Many of the local infrastructure improvement projects in the Corning area over recent years including the
I-86 interchange, the city’s Northside Sewer Project and restorations to historic buildings on Market Street were all helped by Corning Enterprises’ involvement to secure state and federal grants.
Providing employees and other residents access to quality child care is another priority for Corning Enterprises. Three child care centers in the area offer nationally recognized care thanks to early and ongoing support from Enterprises.
Corning Enterprises is also involved in a myriad of other community partnerships supporting health care, education and government.
“The thought behind it all was to focus on the things that created the atmosphere and environment necessary for this community to grow and most importantly to keep and attract new people,” said Amo Houghton Jr. on forming Corning Enterprises. “To that end, an organization had to be put in place. Corning Enterprises was it — thank the Lord it has succeeded.”
