Corning® PYREX® Glassware
Corning's first PYREX catalog in 1915 only had flasks and
beakers.
Of the hundreds of commercial glasses produced, PYREX low expansion borosilicate
Type one glasses comes closest to being the ideal glass for most laboratory
applications.
With proper care, they will withstand nearly all temperatures used in normal
laboratory use. They are highly resistant to chemical attack. Their low
coefficient of expansion allows them to be manufactured with heavy walls,
giving them mechanical strength, while retaining good heat resistance.
Corning offers four borosilicate Type 1 glasses in their PYREX Brand glassware:
-
Code 7740 glass, the original PYREX glass used for most chemistry glassware.
This was the glass used to construct the mirror for the
200 inch Hale telescope on Mount Palomar
-
Actinic red Code 7740 glass, contains a red ultraviolet shielding stain fired
on to the exterior surface
-
Code 7789 glass, is used primarily for bottles
-
Code 7800 glass, with a slightly higher expansion rate than the previous
glasses, is used primarily for pipets
