Corning Cable Systems Awarded First NBN Supply Tender

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA, 08. Oktober 2009 – Corning Cable Systems Pty Ltd, part of Corning Incorporated’s (NYSE:GLW) Telecommunications segment, has been awarded a contract to supply fibre optic cable in the first tender released under the Australian government’s National Broadband Network (NBN) initiative to provide high-speed broadband services nationwide.

The tender issued by Aurora Energy Pty Ltd on behalf of NBN Tasmania Ltd covered fibre optic cable for the construction of the Tasmania NBN backhaul network.

First deliveries are scheduled for October/November 2009, to provide backhaul for the first-stage Tasmania NBN fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) network to be rolled out to the communities in Smithton, Scottsdale and Midway Point, covering almost 5,000 homes.

“We have recently completed the installation and commissioning of state-of-the-art optical cable manufacturing equipment at our Clayton/Victoria plant, and it is fitting that our first sizeable production run will be for the National Broadband Network,” said Rainer Dittrich, managing director, Corning Cable Systems Pty Ltd. “Corning Cable Systems is a recognised global leader in fibre optic cable and end-to-end FTTH solutions, and we are excited about the opportunities that NBN will provide.”
